Open Positions 1

We invite applications for 2 postdoctoral positions at Università degli Studi di Roma “Tor Vergata” , Centro NAST (Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Innovative Instrumentation).

Titles of the Research projects

1) Instrumentation for neutron scattering applied to the investigation of materials of Cultural Heritage interest;

2) Instrumentation for neutron scattering for investigation of ‘single event effects’ in semiconductor microelectronic chips.

Post Doc Positions

For position 1) the postdoc will be involved in the development, design and commissioning of the integrated neutron techniques, i.e. neutron resonant capture analysis (NRCI/NRT), neutron and gamma detector modules and other hardware components. The aim is to develop NRCI as a non-invasive technique for determining 3D distributions of elements in art and archaeological objects. The post doc will be also involved in the hardware and software development of the NRCI components, and will be part of the experimental team at ISIS to validate the technique on real specimens from museums and art collections.

For position 2) the postdoc will be involved in the research program for the development of new instrumentation
concepts and methodology neutron irradiation/dosimetry in the 1-100 MeV range, fast neutron attenuators, sample positioning tables, and will be part of the experimental team at ISIS for the chip irradiation measurements at the ISIS source.

The research activities will be based at both Roma “Tor Vergata” and at the ISIS pulsed neutron source and will involve different degree of national (University of Milano Bicocca) and International (ISIS and SNS spallation neutron source, University of Huston) collaborations.

The post represents an excellent opportunity for young scientists to broaden their experience and develop their expertise.

Qualification and experience

The successful candidates must have experience in material science, physics, mechanical engineering, or related fields, involving neutron and/or x-ray diffraction, or equivalent combination of training and experience, and a strong motivation and interest in developing neutron-based methods. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on technically and scientifically challenging problems are required. Experience with instrument, software and programming development, particularly at a neutron or x-ray synchrotron facility, is desirable.
Software and programming skills and specific diffraction and spectroscopy problems are a plus.
We can offer

* A creative and international workplace with varied and challenging tasks
* Social benefits including life- and accident insurance
* Salary will be in the range 1100 Euro – 1250 Euro per month (after tax), commensurate with experience.
* Accommodation in one of the University residence block house at reduced rate (at 450 Euro/month)

Applicants should send a letter of application, a detailed CV, two academic references, a list of publications to Prof. Carla Andreani (carla.andreani@centronast.it) on +39 06 7259 4441. Review of applications will begin June 1st, 2008, and will continue until the position is filled. For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Prof. Carla Andreani (carla.andreani@centronast.it)
