Research Activity
Dr. Roberta Congestri is research scientist in the Department of Biology at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”.
Her research interests include taxonomy, ecophysiology and ultrastructure of microalgae and cyanobacteria in aquatic biofilms and marine phytoplankton, especially toxic and bloom forming species. Electron microscopy and image analysis techniques; structural, 3-dimensional, and spectral analysis of biofilms by confocal microscopy. Applications in the field of biofilm based remediation of waters and biofouling monitoring. Traceability of algal toxins along the food chain by means of microsensors. Diatom photonics and micro-mechanics, ultrastructural analysis of diatom frustules, pore patterns, silica nanostructures and linking mechanisms for nanotechnology and biodesign.

Research Activity
Prof. Albertano obtained her degree title in Biological Sciences (University of Naples,Italy) in 1978; research activity at the University of Naples (1979-1982); contract professor in Plant Physiology at the University of Calabria (1983-1984). Since 1984, research scientist (1984-1992), assistant professor in Phycology (1993- 1997), associate professor in Botany (1998-2001), full professor in General Botany (2001 to present) at the University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’.
Group leader of the Laboratory for Biology of Algae (LBA), the main interest is on the ecophysiology, cytomorphology and systematics of cyanobacteria and microalgae from subaerial, aquatic and extreme environments. Important research topics include the community structure of phototrophic biofilms, biodeterioration of stone monuments, toxic blooms of cyanobacteria and microalgae in lakes and coastal areas.
Applications in the field of: biotechnology and nanotechnology for the conservation of cultural heritage; algal biomasses for biofuels and innovative compounds; bioremediation of effluent waters; bio-immunosensors for traceability of phycotoxins; advanced microscopy techniques.

Teaching Activities
Prof. Albertano is currently teaching Botany and Evolution, Diversity and Biology of Algae at the Faculty of Sciences. She also co-ordinates the activity of the PhD Schoolin Evolutionary Biology and Ecology at the University of Rome“Tor Vergata.
Teaching activities in undergraduate and graduate biology and biotechnology courses also include applied research, particularly focussing on preventive conservation of stone monuments, production of algal biomass and application of new sensors for environmental monitoring, mostly in collaboration with colleagues of the Department of Chemical Sciences and Technologies.
